SECRETARY'S NOTEPAD

JANUARY 18, 1992

Downers Grove, Jan. 18, 1992 -- The meeting was called to order at 3:03 PM with nine members present.

NOTICE to ALL: The annual ritual of Dues Collection ($12) has once again befallen us. Please take special notice -- checks should now be written payable to:

Frank Mills CATUG Treasurer

And now, some good news. Jay Shepard sent Steve Cooper a "Christmas present": a printer interface to use with his JLO. Jay's a nice guy, isn't he?

With the compliments of his long time friend Wayne White, Bob Swoger brought five keyboards suitable for use with Z2X81/TS1000/TS2068 computers, or whatever. Thanks, Wayne!

As promised, Bob demoed the 1 MEG printer buffer acquired from Bob Miller of Technologic Systems he told us about at the last meeting. The unit is remarkably compact. It was installed on Steves TS2068 just ahead of the printer. Bob sent a 4 page TASWORD 2 document to

the printer and Steves TS2068 was ready te use again in just under 2 seconds! See the REVIEW in the December issue of

HITE-TIMES REWS for details.

There was discussion about the value of QUANTA -- and its newsletter in particular -- to American subscribers. Al Feng [QUANTA member from 1986-1991] expressed a strong concern that QUANTA has taken its five-dozen (plus-or-minus) North American members for granted: Damn colonists, or something -- not worth the effort for proper representation. Al said he was "voting" with his dollars, and NOT renewing his QUANTA membership for 1992.

The consensus opinion is that while QUANTA may be a valuable source of information for hard- ware news, the circumstances of North American distribution of its software library left a lot to be desired.

Al differed with regard to QUANTA's value by noting that introduction of the MINERVA code upgrade to QDOS (along with various code revisions) was the only newsworthy infor- mation he had gleaned from the QUANTA newsletter in the past couple of years. Al feels that the "chatter" in QUANTA is mostly parochial news that is dated or irrelevant to people not living south of Hadrian's Wall.

With the advent of NESQLUG and QLR (Bob Dyl's QL REPORT) complementing the cats Group and Newsletter, Al feels that QUANTA is no longer necessary for the North American QL user for relevant news.

Nazir Pashtoon differed with both points and will be buying a membership simply because he feels he will not be able to get some of the QL information anywhere else (with the fluctuating value of the dollar to the British Pound, however, CATUG will subsidize any amount over $30.00).

Bob Swoger brought in three

RAINBOW magazines, each describing a 68000 based machine in IBM type hardware. Since Pashtoon, Firestone and others in Europe feel that it may be time to move the QL to a more readily available hardware platform, Swoger suggested that instead of re-inventing the wheel, one of these three venders, Frank Hogg Laboratory, Inc., DELMAR or IMS, would get a bigger market share in the market place, and therefore be able to survive longer, if the QL community picked one of

these machines already in production. Cost to the OL community would also be

significantly less to migrate to an existing machine. Though Atari and Amiga are both 68000 machines, neither uses IBM hardware. The DELMAR machine uses a 68000 while the FHL TOMCAT TC-70 and the IMS MM-1 use the 68070. Wake up out there, QL users!

Grant Thomas, a too-distant member, has problems with his QL's keyboard matrix, so he sent it to Bob along with its "Dan Elliott" power supply. It was a first look at the very robust power supply which looks capable of outlasting most of us! It will be checked out and/or replaced before being returned to Grant.

NB: Grant's QL was checked by Al Feng, who expedited return by substituting his last, good matrix for Grant's ailing one. Grant's QL was then re- turned by courier, but subsequently found its way back to CATUG as Grant encountered a non- replicable problem (i.e., NOTHING wrong could be found with the QL at the February CATUG meeting). Consequently, Grant's OL has been returned to him with the hopes that whatever gremlins were plaguing his QL will find another home.

We await further communi- cation on this matter.

Due to circumstances, Al is still short a matrix AFTER the February meeting. It will be interesting to see how he manages to produce the February meeting Minutes! Good luck, Al.

Bob Swoger announced that he will be exchanging Rite-Times News with a new newsletter called ZX91 which is written on a ZX81 (evidence that the old ZX81 is 10 years old and that it has NOT been laid to rest). A copy was available for us to peruse and we wish to compli- ment the author, Andre Baune of Chateauguay, Quebec, Canada, for a job well done. A sugges- tion to Andre: If you haven't researched the work done by Fred Nachbauer and Wilf Rigter to enhance the ZX81, you should.

For those who might have missed it, Bob points to a neat mail merge program for the TS2068 in the September/October 1991 issue of the Rite-Times News. Also another program which will capture the screen (pixel by pixel) for the TS2068 in the November/December 1991 issue.

Elections were held with the result that Nazir Pashtoon returns as President, Steve Cooper is again Vice President, Al Feng has reluctantly become Secretary, and Frank Mills has graciously assumed the duties of the Treasurer. Bob Swoger continues as Editor of Rite- Times Res as it goes into its SIXTH year.

John Donaldson retired as the Secretary due to the pressure of his other activities. It seems that his retirement years find him busier than ever. He remains full of interest in anything OL, and will be in attendance at most meetings. Frank Mills became our treasurer.

The future issue of Rite-Times Res scheduled to contain an updated list of members.

The meeting was closed at 4:02 PM.

John Donaldson, Secretary Chicago Area Timex Users Group

Your loving son, Flynn O'Feenix

NB: As some may note, Flynn is a fan of FINNEGANS WAKE authored by James Joyce. Flynn tells me that if you are not familiar with this style of writing and don't fully understand the tele- graphed message, he will send you a "translation" if you send a SASE enve- lope to him care of yours truly, Al Feng.

An important bylaw amendment was proposed which Flynn failed to mention. A motion to make the "club house" a SMOKE FREE ZONE was made, and as Flynn noted, I wasn't paying enough attention to let you know whose motion it was. The few individuals who do smoke were either caught off guard or were in agreement with the concept as no 'nay' votes were cast. Therefore, for the record: the vote was unanimous.

Could Bob Gilder, Alvon Brandon or any other person from the LIST group (or, elsewhere) with such knowledge, tell us in the isolated Midwest and elsewhere in the lower 48 states, Alaska, Hawaii, Guam, and Puerto Rico with greater specificity how a GOLD CARD can be acquired for the measly sum of $350 (US) as indicated in the January 1992 issue of LISTing?

What a teaser to simply state that $350 is the current price for a GOLD CARD. From whom?

Having said that, we await Hugh Howie's informative recounting of his GOLD CARD escapades.

Personally, I feel the OQL's NETworking capabilities are an important function.

CowO-bunga?! I guess that I've had what might be called a "Clark Kent QL' for the past several years. Until this past month when my QL, et al, went into a "salvaged" SPERRY PC case with a dinky 100 watt PS, my QL motherboard and various interfaces had been NESTLEd (that's a pun, if you didn't catch it) in an AT-case with a robust 230 watt PS.

Though no CATUG members have expressed an interest, if enough people from other user groups directly express an interest, I will detail how to cobble up your own 'SuperQL' so you can save the expense of 2290 SF ($1500!) mentioned by Tim Swenson in the February issue of the CATS Newsletter. The "final" cost will be depen- dent on what you already have, and what you want to end up with (that is, $50-1,000).

Yes, you too can do it right in the comfort of your own home in just a few nights (months?!) from easily accessible, generic [PC-CLONE] parts in a series of articles (okay, the 64-way may be a problem; but, I think this may be available from American Design Components; and, if you opt for a "full tower" case, you shouldn't need it).

If you are willing to spend the time, you don't even need a keyboard interface! You just need to know how to follow directions and solder.

No, you don't need a GOLD CARD for this project. Why try to run when you can still crawl?

Finally, many thanks to Flynn for pinch hitting for me while I await my replacement keyboard matrix [I can't begin to tell you how tedious it is to use a piece of wire on connectors J11 and J12 of the QL motherboard].

HAPPY TRAILS, AND COMPUTING, TO YOU!

Al Feng, Secretary Chicago Area Timex Users Group

Andre Baune writes:

Thank you for your two well edited newsletters. The best of the newsletters of all the clubs I have received. Many thanks. It is people like you that will keep the Sinclair Timex computer going strong. [He must not have received Sink-Link yet! Ed.]

you brought sunshine to my day. I hope my ZX-91 #2 will do the same for you. [What can I say? Indeed, ZX-91 made us all feel good and caused us all to think again about the capabilities of our fine ZX machines. Really, I feel that your newsletter is more plesent to read. Marie Kendoll phoned: ...everthing on the LogiCall disk you sent to Rod worked except VU-CALC. [Sorry, Marie, for the inconvenience caused by my bugged VU-CALC driver for LogiCall. The new driver is in the mail. Please copy it OVER the sick VU-CALC previously given to you and ROD. As a result of your request to print out VU-CALC files to a large printer, I was able to generate two utilities for the Sinclair community and two articles for our newsletters! Thanks, Ed.]

FROM THE EDITORS DISK

We have been asked at times if we have ceased publishing newsletters. This is no doubt due to the fact that we decided to save postage after the last postal increase and reduced mailings of our 6 yearly issues (6 doubled our effective article supply) to 3 times a year. We put our newsletters

nn I UUN

into real envelopes two at a time and sent them to their destinations in better shape.

We have evaluated the argument of Rod Gowen that one function of a newsletter should be to let people know when and where the next meeting is be and fund that since our meeting place never changes except on emergency notice and the meeting time is always the third Saturday of every month, that this argument goes out the window.

As a result of the decision made over a year ago, our club saved $80 in mailings and didn't have to raise its dues from $12. Also, the mailing was made a little easier on our Editor. Thanks, guys ... --==GATOR==--

VC2LP.B1 by Bob Swoger

This LarKen/LogiCall utility was recently requested by Marie Kendoll of Point Roberts, Washington to allow her to print out VU-CALC files to her large printer. The program asks you for the name of the VU-CALC file to load and then which column to print as the left-most column. You are permitted to enter columns 1 through 42 only. It then prints out nine columns and 50 rows from the VU-CALC document. The VU-CALC document is left untouched.

The printer is set to the 72 character width and 8 spaces are added to the left margin so that the printout will look just like a Tasword document.

Our next newsletter shall contain a program to enter the nine columns and 50 rows from the VU-CALC document into a TASWORD 2 file.

TAX-I-QL TIP by Al Feng

The matter of Uncle Sam's hand in your pocket should never be too far from your thoughts.

For those who may not be aware, TAX-I-QL (EMSoft) is -the most extensive ABACUS/QLSS template one can use on his/her QL.

TAX-I-QL is h-u-g-e spreadsheet template which requires a 256K (minimum) memory expansion. From what I can tell, TAX-I-OL is designed/suitable for the CPA who need to "link" (virtually) ALL of the IRS forms.

Because "individuals" certainly comprise the majority of the users, the extent of the tem- plate will appear to be over- kill; with, the result being a minor penalty of a seemingly long calculation time. Time is very subjective, and you will find that it is still faster than doing calculations on the forms in tandem with an adding machine or calculator.

Unfortunately, nothing on/for the QL appears to be perfect; and, TAX-I-QL is no exception. But, TAX-I-QL is accessible for modification (but, use caution; and, ALWAYS double check your calculations regardless of the spreadsheet and/or template your are using).

Any "adjustments" to schedules are limited only to your abili- ty to write/modify an Abacus formula.

A minor TAX-I-QL "flaw" is that the template presumes that the data taken from your W-2 forms for "state tax" is an absolute {i.e., that you will NOT deduct more-or-less than the amount(s) withheld]; and, this is reflec- ted in the value transferred to SCHEDULE A.

For example, Illinois residents pay a percentage of the ADJUS-

TED GROSS INCOME, less two-times (2x) the local real estate tax paid and a

"standard" deduction similar to the Federal deduction. As I am only dealing with one state, I can input a simple, linked formula in the appropriate cell in SCHEDULE A:

(G100 - (2*N13) - 2000) * 0.03

'G100' is the cell containing the "adjusted gross income" (on the template I have); 'N13' is the cell containing the "real

estate tax" paid; '2000' is the "“deduction"- for myself and my wife [this could have been in- put as "G74 * 1000" (exemptions x deduction)]; and '0.03' is the current "tax rate" in Illinois.

Obviously (?!), the state in- come tax rate varies from state to state; and/but, an ASKN/ASKT macro might be incorporated to better quantify the state tax value on SCHEDULE A if you are preparing tax returns from varying states.

Because TAX-I-PC is accessible, its one other "flaw" is that you may eventually decide that you only have to buy a copy for one year; and, then modify it for subsequent years.

HHMmm. Definitely worth buying at least one time. TAX-I-QL ($24.95) is available from:
